School fees are one expense no one can avoid. My child's quarterly school fee is ₹60,000, which means ₹2.4 lakh every year.
So I started wondering: can I get something back from an expense I have to make anyway?
Turns out, yes. I pay through the Tata Neu app using my HDFC Tata Neu Infinity RuPay Credit Card. Here's exactly how the math works.
| Particular | Amount |
|---|---|
| Quarterly school fee | ₹60,000 |
| 5% reward | ₹3,000 |
| Convenience fee @ 1.5% | −₹900 |
| Net benefit per payment | ₹2,100 |
| Payments per year | 4 |
| Annual benefit | ₹8,400 |
The important number is the net benefit: ₹2,100 per payment, not the headline 5%.
Open the Tata Neu app.
Click on Categories
Click on Bills & Recharges in Payment Section.
Select Education Fees in Utilities Section.
Select Your State
Select or search for my child's school.
Enter the fee amount.
Select my HDFC Tata Neu Infinity RuPay Credit Card.
Check the convenience fee shown on the payment screen.
Complete the payment.
It takes about two minutes. The NeuCoins appear in my account within a few days of statement generation.
School fees are unavoidable. I'm not spending extra money to earn rewards. I'm simply using a payment method that gives me something back on an expense I already have.
The convenience fee matters. Always check it before paying. The net benefit is what counts, not the reward percentage.
A note on current terms: HDFC's official terms state that education payments made directly through school websites or POS machines earn NeuCoins, while payments through third-party apps like CRED and Cheq do not. My experience is specifically with Tata Neu's own bill payment section. Reward rates, caps, eligibility and fees can change, so check the current terms and the payment screen before you pay.
