Petrol Vs Diesel Car| Petrol or Diesel Car?? Confused? Read this before buying | India

Hi,

First of all congratulations that you have finalized your dream car and are going to purchase. There are so many models of the car but confusion comes when the same model is available in both Petrol and Diesel.

Through this article, i will explain the total cost of buying, keeping and selling the car whether it is petrol and diesel.

Let us take example that you are going to purchase Suzuki Swift which is selling like hot cakes and we assume that you are staying in NCR region to get the costs of both the car and fuel.

Suzuki Swift

* All data is from carwale.com and for Delhi Dwarka RTO
** Charges are in INR

Cost difference = (Vdi -Vxi) (778612-638753)= Rs 139859

It means that you will give nearly Rs 1.4 lakhs more at the time of buying Swift VDI then Swift VXI.

Let us see the running cost now.

Petrol Prices in Delhi - Rs. 77.1 /L
Diesel Prices in Delhi - Rs. 68.54/L
*** Petrol and Diesel Prices keeps changing on daily basis. Please check the rates on mypetrolprice.com

Seeing the trend, let us assume that the petrol prices do not fluctuate much and let us calculate the running cost of the selected car for 1 Lakh Kms.

Cost of Vxi Swift per KM = (77.1/22) = Rs 3.51
Cost of Vxi Swift after 1 Lakh Kms = (3.51*100000) = Rs 351000
Cost of Vdi Swift per KM = (68.54/28.4) = Rs 2.42
Cost of Vdi Swift after 1 Lakh Kms = (2.41*100000) = Rs 242000

Service cost of Vxi for 1 Lakh Kms = Rs 84000/-
Service cost of Vdi for 1 Lakh Kms = Rs 96000/-

Let us not consider the marginal cost difference in insurances of both the cars over the running period of 1 Lakhs Kms.

Total Fuel cost difference = (Vdi-Vxi)(242000-351000) =Rs -109000
Total Service cost difference = (Vdi-Vxi)(96000-84000)= Rs 12000

Total cost difference after running your car 1 Lakh Kms = (139859+12000-109000) = Rs. 42859/-

It means you will pay Rs 42859/- extra from your pocket if you buy diesel car and run for 1 Lakh Kms.

Suppose you buy petrol and do a FD @7% of the difference amount of Rs 139859 and you run the car for 1 Lakh kms in 5 years. Your will earn an interest of Rs 56299/- in 5 years.

Therefore you will save (42859 + 56299) = Rs. 99158 /-

Simple calculations show that a person will save nearly 1 Lakh Rs. if he buys a petrol swift rather than a diesel swift in 2018 and run the same for 1 Lakh Kms in 5 years.

Let us perform the same study on the other hot selling car of these days -

Honda Amaze.

* All data is from carwale.com and for Delhi Dwarka RTO
** Charges are in INR

Cost difference = (S-IDEC -S-IVtech) (866515-732962)= Rs 133553/-

Cost of S-Vtech Amaze per KM = (77.1/19.5) = Rs 3.95
Cost of S-Vtech Amaze  after 1 Lakh Kms = (3.95*100000) = Rs 395000
Cost of S-Dtech Amaze  per KM = (68.54/27.4) = Rs 2.51
Cost of S-Dtech Amaze after 1 Lakh Kms = (2.51*100000) = Rs 251000

Service cost of S-Vtec for 1 Lakh Kms = Rs 30267/-
Service cost of S-Dtec for 1 Lakh Kms = Rs 50508/-

After 1 Lakh kms :

Total Fuel cost difference = (SDtech-SVtech)(251000-395000) =Rs -144000
Total Service cost difference = (SDtech-SVtech)(50508-30267)= Rs 20241

Total cost difference after running your car 1 Lakh Kms = (133553+20241-144000) = Rs. 9794/-

It means you will pay Rs 9794/- extra from your pocket if you buy diesel Amaze and run for 1 Lakh Kms.

Suppose you buy petrol and do a FD @7% of the difference amount of Rs 133553 and you run the car for 1 Lakh kms in 5 years. Your will earn an interest of Rs 53762/- in 5 years.

Therefore you will save (9794+ 53762) = Rs. 63556 /-

Simple calculations show that a person will save nearly 64K Rs. if he buys a petrol Amaze rather than a diesel Amaze in 2018 and run the same for 1 Lakh Kms in 5 years.

Seeing the above calculations, i would suggest everyone to calculate the money involved for the model of the car you have selected and then decide which car do you want. Dont just jump on the decision of buying diesel cars directly.

Please comment and share if this helped.

Also, please comment you need any help in deciding a car to buy.

    1. if you are asking me to help you choose between various models of Ford Aspire then my choice will be
Ford Aspire Trend plus 1.2 Ti-VCT.
It has all the features you need and basically is a good car.
Do ask for free maintenance packages.

  4. I always wonder why Suzuki is not launching Breeza in Petrol as it is a very nice car.
If you are living in NCR then please dont buy it as Diesel cars are only allowed for 10 years
but buy it if you are living in rest of India.

    1. Believe me, suggesting a car to someone makes my day and if they purchase the suggested car then i have a party at my place. :) :)

I would suggest you go for either Etios Liva or Ford Freestyle which you find suitable for your personality.
Both the cars are heavy build and are safe on highways.
you will get all the features you desire in your budget.
Go for petrol as there is not much difference between petrol and diesel prices in Chennai.

Your running will be nearly 1600 kms - 1800 kms a month which means you will cover 1 lakh kms in nearly 5 years. I would suggest you to take petrol Ford Ecosport or Renault Duster or Hyundai Venue which will be released on May21 which ever you like. You can go for Hyundai Creta but in your budget you will get the base model which you may not like as it may not have the desired features.

If you have to only drive in ncr then i will suggest you to go for Toyota Yaris CVT model as it will give you automatic transmission and reliability.

Also if you can increase your budget a little bit and stick to SUV then buy Hyundai Creta eyes closed.

Had a look at Venue 1.0, Aspire 1.5 Diesel, Eco Sport Diesel, Honda Aamze, Nexon ( But Dont wanna purchase a Maruti) and many more but still confused..
Should i opt for Petrol or Diesel ?? If Diesel, shall BS VI norms affect the future or it could be diesel will become costly in coming years.. If petrol, mileage should be decent

Since your running is maximum of 2000 kms/month, you can go for diesel car. But do compare the petrol model of whichever car you will go for.

Try Toyota Yaris (1.5 L Petrol car) which is the best petrol car in your budget. It will give bigger engine and reliability of Toyota.

In small SUV category, go for Venue (go for 1.0 turbo only if you are like fast pick up) as it is 1 lakh costlier than normal 1.2 engine.
In diesel, Ranault Duster - Ford Ecosport will fall in your budget which are two great cars.

Do let me know which one you buy by simply attaching a pic :)

  8. I,am very very confused between Maruti Suzuki cars and Hyundai or other foreign company cars, as people around me says that spare parts of these foreign cars and not get available that easily and maintenance is very high of them. They says buy swift ka top model of petrol for daily use as my daily travel will be 30km on average. So my question to you is which car should i buy? Budget is around 10-12 Lakhs.

  9. Hello Raman,

Very impressed by your analysis. It seems you should have been a researcher and the world would would have received fantastic scientific contributions from you.

I am professor who live in coastal region of Karnataka (curvy roads). I need to commute around 125 kms (to and from) my office. Essentially 3000kms/month and one family (of 3) trip of 500 kms. So, on an average, 3500 kms/month. I also take a 600 kms long ride to my home town once in 3 months.

Kindly guide me. Currently I have Honda BRV and I wanna buy a 5 seater now. ON EXCHANGE basis or else selling it else where too. net budget is 9-10 lakhs.

Suggest me a car in following conditions

Priorities: comfortable for THREE 6 ft persons at back | car built body | essential safety feature (ABS, EBD, ESP) | air bags | resale value | least maintenance

    NO preference on petrol/diesel.

    Thanking you,

    Vishwa
