Petrol Vs CNG ?? Which car to buy?? Cost Comparison

Hi,

There was a question for me to cost compare Petrol and CNG Cars.

I am doing the same to help you save money by buying the best car available.

There are only 7 cars ( as per Carwale.com)  in Indian Market which comes in factory fitted CNG kit. You can install a kit in any car though but in this blog post i will discuss only those cars which comes with factory fitted CNG kit.

Factory fitted CNG kits means that they have been installed in the car during the car assembly stage not after the car is rolled out. This has more benefits as this has dual fuel gauge in dashboard and directly shows the status of both the fuels and you dont have to install any other meter.

So, let us take example the classic CNG - Maruti Suzuki Celerio. CNG variant comes in VXi and VXi(O). we will compare Vxi model as this is the most common model purchased.

Cost difference = (Vxi(CNG) -Vxi) (569116-502756)= Rs 66360/-

It means that you will give nearly Rs 66 thousand more at the time of buying Celerio CNG then Celerio petrol.

Let us see the running cost now.

Petrol Prices in Delhi - Rs. 70.2 /L
CNG Prices in Delhi - Rs. 40.61/Kg
*** Petrol and CNG Prices keeps changing on daily basis. Please check the rates on mypetrolprice.com

Seeing the trend, let us assume that the petrol prices do not fluctuate much and let us calculate the running cost of the selected car for 1 Lakh Kms.

Cost of Vxi Celerio per KM = (70.2/23.1) = Rs 3.04
Cost of Vxi Celerio after 1 Lakh Kms = (3.04*100000) = Rs 304000
Cost of Vxi CNG Celerio per KM = (40.61/31.79) = Rs 1.28
Cost of Vdi CNG Celerio after 1 Lakh Kms = (1.28*100000) = Rs 128000

Service cost of Vxi Petrol for 1 Lakh Kms = Rs 36171/-
Service cost of Vxi CNG for 1 Lakh Kms = Rs 45000/-

Let us not consider the marginal cost difference in insurances of both the cars over the running period of 1 Lakhs Kms.

Total Fuel cost difference = (Vxi(CNG)-Vxi)(128000-304000) =Rs -176000
Total Service cost difference = (Vxi(CNG)-Vxi)(45000-36171)= Rs 8829

Total cost difference after running your car 1 Lakh Kms = (66360+8829-176000) = Rs. - 100811/-

It means you will save  Rs 100811/- to your pocket if you buy CNG Celerio VXi and run for 1 Lakh Kms.

Suppose you buy petrol and do a FD @7% of the difference amount of Rs 66360 and you run the car for 1 Lakh kms in 5 years. Your will earn an interest of Rs 26713/- in 5 years.

Therefore you will save (100811 - 26713) = Rs. 74098 /-

Simple calculations show that a person will save nearly 74 thousand Rs. if he buys a CNG Celerio rather than a Petrol Celerio in 2018 and run the same for 1 Lakh Kms in 5 years.

Let us perform the same study on the other hot selling car of these days -

Hyundai Santro

* All data is from carwale.com and for Delhi Dwarka RTO

Cost difference = (Magna C -Magna P) (586667-514098)= Rs 72569/-

Cost of Magna P Santro per KM = (70.2/20.3) = Rs 3.46
Cost of Magna P Santro  after 1 Lakh Kms = (3.46*100000) = Rs 346000
Cost of Magna C Santro  per KM = (40.61/30.48) = Rs 1.33
Cost of Magna C Santro after 1 Lakh Kms = (1.33*100000) = Rs 133000

Service cost of Magna P Santro for 1 Lakh Kms = Rs 25000/-
Service cost of Magna C Santro for 1 Lakh Kms = Rs 45000/-

After 1 Lakh kms :

Total Fuel cost difference = (Magna C Santro-Magna P Santro)(133000-346000) =Rs -213000
Total Service cost difference = (Magna C Santro-Magna P Santro)(45000-25000)= Rs 20000

Total cost difference after running your car 1 Lakh Kms = (72569+20000-213000) = Rs. 120431/-

It means you will save  Rs 120431/- to your pocket if you buy CNG Santro and run for 1 Lakh Kms.

Suppose you buy petrol and do a FD @7% of the difference amount of Rs 72569 and you run the car for 1 Lakh kms in 5 years. Your will earn an interest of Rs 29213/- in 5 years.

Therefore you will save (120431- 29213) = Rs. 91218 /-

Simple calculations show that a person will save nearly 91K Rs. if he buys a CNG Santro rather than a Petrol Santro in 2018 and run the same for 1 Lakh Kms in 5 years.

Seeing the above calculations, i would suggest everyone to calculate the money involved for the model of the car you have selected and then decide which car do you want. Dont just jump on the decision of buying cars directly.

Please comment and share if this helped.

Also, please comment you need any help in deciding a car to buy.
